The original deck was a huge rectangular expanse of old painted wood. The new deck is a smaller size and is an interesting shape that specifically arranges ones viewpoints to take in breathtaking sights - Mt. Rainier, Commencement Bay, Vashon Island, and more. Benches along the perimeter were chosen instead of railings to minimize any distractions or obstructions to the views. The benches also add seating without taking up the main area space. The minimal steps leading to the flagstone patio were designed to be seats as well as steps. The footprint of the original deck was converted to three new features - a more interesting deck, a flagstone patio, and a water feature. Definitely a trade up!
